UK Master of Laws Courses
Introduction to Master of Laws
'LLM' is an abbreviation of the Latin Legum Magister, meaning Master of Laws. It is a postgraduate course designed for law graduates and practising lawyers to specialise in a particular area, such as tax, environmental or employment law. Courses generally last one year.
The actual subject studied can vary greatly, but certain options like tax law are enduringly popular. Most law schools only offer a few places, so it often makes sense to decide upon a subject before choosing an university. The choice of LLM can provide graduates with a competitive edge or the opportunity to branch out or change direction in their current job.

Master of Laws Careers
An LLM does not necessarily lead to a degree in itself, but can supplement an existing law degree in the following professions:
- Chartered legal executive
- Chartered accountant
- Patent attorney
- Human resources officer
Master of Laws Entry Requirements
In the UK, LLM courses are almost exclusively open to graduates who already hold a professional law degree, although there is no need for an applicant to go into the legal profession after the course. In some exceptional cases, candidates without a law degree may be considered, but an undergraduate degree and plenty of relevant experience will be necessary in this case. A strong command of English is required for the course, so the average required IELTS score is 7.0.
